For the Lord’s Day 7.31.16

Dear Covenant Church Family,

“Our mercy is truly love only if our efforts are a response to a desire to obey God and to help the person.  But our mercy is really fear, if our efforts are responses to a desire to stay safe, to look good, and so on.  A real minister risks anything–social awkwardness, a tongue-lashing, looking foolish–to respond in love.”

Timothy J. Keller, Ministries of Mercy, P&R Publishing, Phillipsburg, NJ, 1997, pp. 130.

For the Lord’s Day 7.10.16

Dear Covenant Church Family,

We can pursue a lot of different things in life, even many good things!!! But, we need to remember that it is all temporary and sooner or later fades away. If we want something that will last… and if we want something that is truly valuable… then we must pursue what is eternal. We must pursue the things of heaven. Scripture says, “if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” It reminds me of the refrain of a popular hymn: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face; and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.”

For the Lord’s Day 6.19.16

Dear Covenant Church Family,

I came across a few thoughts from a 17th century puritan preacher:

“Do we love the Word preached?  Do we prize it in our judgments? Do we receive it into our hearts? Do we fear the loss of the Word preached more than the loss of peace and trade? Do we attend to the Word with reverential devotion? When the judge is giving his charge on the bench, all attend. When the Word is preached, the great God is giving his charge. Do we listen to it as to a matter of life and death? This is a good sign that we love the Word.”

For the Lord’s Day 5.29.16

Dear Covenant Church Family,

Let us be careful not to make idols of the good things of this life.  I am speaking of God’s blessings such as comfort, health, peace, prosperity, relationships, etc…  We are not entitled to any of those blessings even though God often graciously gives them to us.  But, how will you respond if one or two or all of those things are taken away from you?  The Old Testament saint Job said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
