The Virgin Birth

Matthew 1:20 says, “But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.'”  Obviously, we don’t understand how this happened.  We simply cannot explain how the Spirit of God, as the angel told Mary in Luke’s gospel, will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.  We simply can’t explain that, but that is what we believe because God’s Word says so.  Even when the world in all of it’s wisdom looks at us and laughs.  Even when the world says, “You Christians are so gullible.  The virgin birth is impossible.”  But, it’s not that we’re gullible.  Is it?  It’s just that we believe God.  We can even agree with the naysayers that a virgin birth is impossible.  It is! …with man!  But not with God.  We believe Genesis 1:1 don’t we?  “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”  And our theology teaches us that God made all things out of nothing.  So, if our God can make all things out of nothing… then we can also know and believe that He can make a way to come into this world through the womb of a young virgin as the Holy Scriptures say.  Joseph and Mary believed it.  The apostles believed it.  And so has Christ’s church throughout all of it’s history.
