Poor in spirit

The first beatitude in Jesus’ sermon on the mount is found in verse 3 of chapter 5 in Matthew’s gospel.  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” So, the question is: Do you want to be blessed by God?  If so, Jesus says that you must be poor in spirit. It doesn’t sound very appealing, does it?  We like to be rich rather than poor.  But, Jesus is talking about our spirit here and not our bank account.  He is saying that you must realize that spiritually you have nothing to offer to God. Once Foolish…

Titus 3:3 says, “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.” When we are tempted to turn and run away from somebody because they are foolish, or because they are disobedient, or because they are living in deep sin… the Scriptures teach us that we must never forget that we were at one time in the very same boat.
