Giving

Matthew 6:3-4 says, “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.  And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”  Now, this is an interesting statement from Jesus, isn’t it?  “Don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”  I mean just think about that for a second and you know that it is impossible.  We have our one brain that tells both of our hands what to do.  They are both right there in front of us and so we know what they are doing.  And most of the time they are working together to lift something or catch a ball or hug somebody or scratch my back.  I use both of them together and I know what they are doing.
Jesus is obviously speaking metaphorically.  He is teaching us how to give in a way that does not promote hypocrisy. Continue reading
