For the Lord’s Day 3.1.15

Dear Covenant Church Family,

We will celebrating the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper this Lord’s Day.  Take a look at question #81 of the Heidelberg Catechism as you prepare yourself for worship this week.

  • Who are to come to the table of the Lord?
  • Those who are truly displeased with themselves because of their sins and yet trust that these are forgiven them and that their remaining weakness is covered by the suffering and death of Christ, and who also desire more and more to strengthen their faith and amend their life. But hypocrites and thQose who do not repent eat and drink judgment upon themselves.[1]

For the Lord’s Day 2.22.15

Dear Covenant Church Family,
The apostle Peter wrote:  “9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.  10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9-10

From Edmund P. Clowney’s book “The Church”:  God’s people are his own possession, his treasure.  the church is defined by belonging to God: ‘I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people’ (Lev. 26:12).  The Bible uses many figures to describe this relation.  Israel is God’s son, his spouse, his vine, his flock.  In the New Testament, the church is Christ’s flock, branches of the true vine, his bride, his body, his temple, the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, the house of God.”

Hymns for worship:
#65 Before Jehovah’s Awesome Throne (from Psalm 100)
How Deep the Father’s Love for Us
Arise, My Soul, Arise
Sermon Title and Text:
“The Sixth Commandment”
Exodus 20:12-17

1) The Foundation of the Sixth Commandment
2) The Teaching of the Sixth Commandment
3) Our Response to the Sixth Commandment

May God bless you all,

For the Lord’s Day 2.8.15

Dear Covenant Church Family,

I am so thankful for the printing press.  What a blessing to have the writings of those who have gone before us!  Like this 17th century guy from the Netherlands…

Believers, you who seek Jesus unto justification and sanctification, do not fear the coming of the Lord.  Instead, long for it and anticipate it with great joy; love His appearing (2 Tim 4:8). “Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh” (James 5:8).  Comfort each other with the promise of His coming (1 Thess 4:16-18), and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing nigh (Luke 21:28).  Ought you not to do so?”  Wilhelmus a Brakel
