For the Lord’s Day 3.29.15

Dear Covenant Church Family,

“Love for our neighbor is the fountain of all those virtues we are to exercise toward him, but it is humility that adorns these virtues.  However excellent the performance of a virtue may be, if there is pride in the person who performs this duty, such performance will reek and be entirely without luster.  Therefore, a believer who in the way of holiness wishes to live to the glory of God and render the church honorable must strive to be humble.”

“Humility is the humble disposition of the heart of the believer — both in a personal sense and toward his neighbor.  It consists in having a correct judgment concerning himself whereby he neither elevates himself above his condition, nor wishes to be elevated by others as such.”

Both quotes above are from the writings of Wilhelmus a Brakel.  These quotes are from page 67 of the 4th book of what is entitled “The Christian’s Reasonable Service.”  As you can tell, I do not remember the rules of footnoting and bibliography.  Please feel free to help me out with that if you wish, only do not report me to the higher ups!

For the Lord’s Day 3.8.15

Dear Covenant Church Family,

Concerning “day-light savings time,” I do not say anything about it in the fall because if someone shows up early to church… That’s great!  If someone shows up early they could join those who gather for prayer at 9am.  If someone shows up early they could sing along with those rehearsing the hymns for the worship service.  If someone shows up early they could enjoy some good hot coffee and have some extra time to enjoy fellowship with other church family.  If someone shows up early they could take advantage of a Sunday School class with friends.

But, this is “day-light savings time” for the spring.  So, I am reminding you to set your clocks forward this weekend so that you will not miss out on gathering with the saints at Covenant this Lord’s Day.  And by the way, it would still be nice if you show up a little early.  See the above paragraph. 😉
